Bumble Paying Users Plummet 21% Amid Major AI Overhaul – Ankor Tech

Bumble is facing a significant contraction in its subscriber base, reporting a 21.1% drop in paying users during the first quarter of 2026. The platform, which is currently struggling to retain Gen Z users, saw its total number of paying members fall to 3.2 million, down from 4 million during the same period last year.

Financial Performance: Quality Over Quantity?

Despite the decline in user volume, Bumble’s financial results present a nuanced picture. Total revenue dipped 14.1% to $212.4 million, and Bumble app revenue fell to $172.7 million. However, the company managed to outperform market expectations. By aggressively cutting sales and marketing expenses, Bumble saw its net earnings climb to $52.6 million, a sharp increase from the $19.8 million reported in the year-ago quarter.

Founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd characterized the shrinking user base as a “deliberate reset.” According to the company, the strategy prioritizes higher-quality, more intentional members over raw scale. This shift is reflected in the metrics, as the total average revenue per paying user increased by nearly 9%.

The Path Forward: AI-Driven Transformation

Bumble’s long-term recovery hinges on a massive technological overhaul. The company is currently migrating from its legacy platform to a cloud-native, AI-powered infrastructure. This transition aims to improve match compatibility and accelerate the deployment of new features.

The company is betting that its next-generation recommendation engine will be the catalyst for a rebound. “When our technology and our next-gen recommendation engine can actually help better connect people more compatibly… that’s where the magic happens,” Herd stated during the investor call.

Reimagining the Dating Experience

The core of Bumble’s strategy is a move away from the traditional, swiping-heavy model, which the company believes is increasingly outdated. Key updates expected by Q4 include:

  • AI Matchmaking: The integration of “Bee,” an AI-powered matchmaker that analyzes preferences and communication styles to suggest compatible partners and explain the reasoning behind matches.
  • Enhanced Profiles: A transition toward “chapter-style” profiles that offer deeper insight into users beyond static photos and short bios.
  • Real-World Focus: A structural redesign aimed at moving users off the app and onto actual dates more efficiently.

Momentum Beyond Dating

While the core dating app undergoes a transformation, Bumble is finding success in its social-focused vertical. Engagement on Bumble BFF has seen an uptick, particularly among Gen Z women. The introduction of the “Groups” tab—which allows users to plan hangouts and organize events—has proven effective, with the number of group joins nearly doubling between December and March.

For now, Bumble remains in a transition phase. While the company maintains that its focus on ecosystem health will yield long-term results, the success of this strategy remains a high-stakes bet until the full reimagined experience is available to the public later this year.
