Google officially launched a suite of AI-driven updates for Android this Wednesday, headlined by a new automation feature that allows Gemini to execute multi-step tasks. Initially available in the U.S. and Korea, this functionality enables users to offload specific actions—such as ordering food or booking rides—directly to the AI assistant.

How Gemini Automation Works

The beta feature is designed to handle sequences within select applications. Supported platforms include DoorDash, Grubhub, Instacart, Lyft, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Uber, and Uber Eats. In Korea, the integration extends to Kaemin and Kakao T. At launch, the automation tool is restricted to specific high-end hardware, including the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S26 series.

To ensure user security, Google has implemented strict guardrails. Automations require an explicit command from the device owner, and users can monitor progress in real-time to intervene if necessary. The process operates within a secure, virtual window, limiting the AI’s access strictly to the apps required for the task.

Expanded Security and Search Capabilities

Beyond automation, Google is bolstering its defense mechanisms. The Scam Detection feature for phone calls is expanding to the Samsung Galaxy S26 series in the U.S. Furthermore, Gemini’s on-device model will now identify scam text messages on Pixel 10 devices, with a rollout planned for the Galaxy S26 series soon.

The update also enhances Circle to Search. Users can now identify multiple items on their screen simultaneously. Rather than isolating a single object, the tool can analyze entire outfits or groups of items, providing comprehensive information on all visible elements at once.

The Competitive Landscape

This push into AI-driven task management places Google in direct competition with other major players. Companies like OpenAI are pushing scheduled tasks in ChatGPT, while Anthropic’s “Cowork” and viral tools like OpenClaw are aggressively automating file management and web-based workflows.

While Google continues to integrate these features through consistent Pixel Drops and OS updates, competitors like Apple face ongoing delays. Apple’s comprehensive AI suite, including the anticipated Siri overhaul, has seen its release timeline pushed back, leaving a window of opportunity for Android’s current feature deployment.
