Google has successfully curbed the influx of malicious software on the Play Store throughout 2025. According to the company’s latest Android app ecosystem safety report, increased investments in proactive security systems and advanced AI technology have significantly deterred bad actors from targeting the platform.

Declining Numbers in Malicious Activity

In 2025, Google blocked 1.75 million policy-violating applications from reaching the Play Store. This represents a downward trend compared to the 2.36 million apps blocked in 2024 and the 2.28 million in 2023.

The deterrent effect is also evident in the reduction of banned developer accounts. Google removed 80,000 accounts for attempting to publish malicious content in 2025, a significant drop from the 158,000 accounts banned in 2024 and 333,000 in 2023.

AI-Powered Defense and Verification

Google attributes these results to a multi-layered security strategy. Key initiatives include mandatory pre-review checks, developer verification, and rigorous testing requirements. The company emphasizes that its “AI-powered, multi-layer protections” are effectively discouraging bad actors from attempting to exploit the ecosystem.

Currently, Google performs over 10,000 safety checks on every app submission and maintains continuous monitoring post-publication. The integration of generative AI models into the review process has proven vital, enabling human reviewers to identify complex malicious patterns with greater speed and precision. Google has already signaled plans to scale these AI investments throughout 2026.

Data Privacy and Review Integrity

Beyond malware, the report highlights efforts to protect user data and maintain review authenticity:

  • Data Access: Google prevented more than 255,000 apps from gaining excessive access to sensitive user information, down from 1.3 million in 2024.
  • Review Integrity: The company blocked 160 million spam ratings and reviews, successfully preventing an average 0.5-star rating drop for apps targeted by review bombing.

The Shift to Non-Play Store Threats

While the Play Store has become more secure, threats outside the official ecosystem are rising. Google Play Protect identified over 27 million new malicious apps outside of the Play Store in 2025, a sharp increase from 13 million in 2024 and 5 million in 2023. These figures suggest that while the Play Store’s defenses have become formidable, malicious actors are increasingly shifting their focus toward side-loading and third-party app installations to reach unsuspecting users.
