Discord is set to implement a mandatory global age verification system starting next month, aiming to enforce a “teen-appropriate” environment by default for all users. This initiative restricts access to age-sensitive content and specific platform settings, reserving them exclusively for users who can formally verify their status as adults.
How Discord Will Determine Your Age
The platform is introducing a two-tiered approach to age management. Most adults will not need to undergo manual verification, as Discord will utilize an automated age inference model. This system analyzes account tenure, device activity, and high-level community interaction patterns. The company explicitly stated that it does not monitor private messages or message content to perform these assessments.
Users who do not meet the criteria for automatic inference will be required to verify their age manually. This involves either a facial age estimation process or the submission of government-issued identification to third-party vendors. Discord has indicated that it plans to expand these verification methods in the future.
Restricted Features for Unverified Users
The new policies impose strict limitations on users who are not confirmed as adults. These restrictions include:
- Inability to unblur sensitive content.
- Restricted access to age-gated servers, channels, and specific app commands.
- Default routing of messages from unknown users to a separate inbox, which cannot be modified by unverified accounts.
- Mandatory warning prompts for incoming friend requests from unknown users.
- Disabling the ability to speak on stage in servers.
The company emphasizes that facial estimation data is processed locally on the user’s device and does not leave the hardware. Furthermore, ID documents submitted to vendors are intended for rapid deletion following the confirmation process.
Privacy Concerns and Industry Context
The push for mandatory verification comes with significant scrutiny regarding data security. Last October, Discord disclosed a security breach at a third-party vendor that exposed the sensitive data of approximately 70,000 users, including government ID photos. This incident has fueled ongoing debates led by digital rights activists regarding the safety risks of widespread age-check mandates.
A Growing Trend in Online Safety
Discord’s decision to scale these protections globally follows successful pilot programs in the U.K. and Australia. The move aligns with broader industry trends, as platforms like Roblox have introduced mandatory facial verification for chat access, and YouTube has implemented its own age-estimation technology in the U.S. to ensure age-appropriate experiences.
“Rolling out teen-by-default settings globally builds on Discord’s existing safety architecture,” stated Savannah Badalich, head of product policy at Discord. The full transition to these new protocols is scheduled to begin in early March.
