Google has officially launched a suite of powerful AI-driven tools for Gmail, transforming the platform into a proactive personal assistant. The update includes a new AI-powered Inbox, AI Overviews for search, and a native “Proofread” feature, significantly expanding the capabilities previously reserved for premium subscribers.

The New AI Inbox: Proactive Task Management
The centerpiece of this update is the new AI Inbox tab, which organizes your digital life into two distinct sections: “Suggested to-dos” and “Topics to catch up on.”
- Suggested to-dos: Provides summaries of high-priority emails requiring immediate action, such as bill reminders or administrative tasks like confirming mailing addresses for prescriptions.
- Topics to catch up on: Groups updates into logical categories like “Finances” and “Purchases,” keeping you informed on status changes, such as order deliveries or end-of-year statements.
According to Blake Barnes, VP of Product at Google, this feature is designed to have the user’s back by surfacing critical information proactively. The traditional inbox remains available, allowing users to toggle this AI-driven view on or off depending on their needs.
Natural Language Search with AI Overviews
Searching through thousands of emails is now faster and more intuitive. Google is introducing AI Overviews to Gmail search, allowing users to ask complex, natural language questions rather than relying on keyword matching.

Instead of manually opening multiple threads to find information, you can simply ask, “Who was the plumber that gave me a quote for the bathroom renovation last year?” The AI will parse your inbox and provide a concise answer at the top of your search results. This functionality is currently rolling out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Native Proofreading and Writing Assistance
To reduce reliance on third-party tools like Grammarly or external LLMs, Google is integrating a native “Proofread” feature. This tool analyzes drafts to improve clarity, conciseness, and structure. It offers one-click suggestions for word choices, active voice conversion, and the correction of common errors like homophone mix-ups.

Expanded Access for All Users
Google is also democratizing access to its AI toolkit. Features previously gated behind paid subscriptions are now rolling out to all users, including:
- Help Me Write: Generates full email drafts based on simple user prompts.
- AI Overviews for threads: Provides instant summaries of long, complex email conversations.
- Suggested Replies: Offers context-aware responses that mirror the user’s personal tone and style.
Google emphasizes that these features are entirely optional. The company maintains that personal data is processed in a strictly isolated environment and is not used to train their foundational AI models.
