X Tests Profile Transparency to Combat AI Bots – Ankor Tech

In a strategic move to restore platform authenticity, X is launching a new feature designed to expose detailed background information on user profiles. The initiative, announced by X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, aims to help users distinguish between genuine individuals and increasingly sophisticated AI-driven bots.

New Data Points for Enhanced Verification

The upcoming experiment will display additional metadata directly on user profiles. According to a recent announcement, the platform plans to show the account creation date, geographic location, history of username changes, and specific usage patterns.

When you read content on X, you should be able to verify its authenticity. This is critical to getting a pulse on important issues happening in the world.

Identifying Red Flags and Misinformation

By surfacing these signals, X intends to empower users to perform their own due diligence. Discrepancies between a user’s self-reported bio and their actual account data—such as a profile claiming to be U.S.-based while the account was registered via an international app store—will serve as clear indicators of potential bad actors.

While these data points are not definitive proof of malicious activity, they allow users to cross-reference behavior. Multiple username changes combined with mismatched regional data could flag accounts attempting to sow misinformation.

Privacy Controls and Rollout Strategy

Testing is scheduled to begin next week, initially targeting X employee profiles to refine the user experience. Addressing privacy concerns, Bier confirmed that users will have the option to opt out of displaying this information. However, he noted that opting out will likely be explicitly labeled on the profile to maintain transparency.

To protect users in regions where online speech could result in physical or legal repercussions, X is exploring the use of broader regional identifiers instead of specific country data.

Industry Context: The Push for Trust

X’s move aligns with industry-wide efforts to increase transparency. Instagram already offers an “About this profile” feature, which allows users to view account longevity and location history. Instagram head Adam Mosseri recently emphasized that these signals are essential for users to evaluate the credibility of the content they consume.

This update follows X’s aggressive removal of 1.7 million bots involved in reply spam, marking a concerted effort by the platform to sanitize its ecosystem and curb the influence of automated accounts.
