Meta is doubling down on nostalgia to drive user engagement. Facebook is officially reviving its classic “poke” feature, integrating it as a core element of the platform experience to capture the attention of younger demographics through new gamification mechanics.

The update introduces a dedicated button directly on user profiles, allowing for instant interaction. Recipients receive a notification, and all activity can be managed at facebook.com/pokes. This centralized hub allows users to track their “poke count” with friends, providing an option to dismiss unwanted nudges.

The strategy appears to be working. After Meta made it easier to find the poking page via search in March 2024, the platform saw a 13x spike in usage, prompting this latest, more prominent integration.

Gamification and the “Streaks” Effect

Meta’s move mirrors the high-engagement strategies used by competitors like Snapchat and TikTok, which utilize TikTok Streaks to keep users returning to the app. By displaying poke counts and introducing visual milestones—such as fire emojis or “100” badges next to a friend’s name—Facebook is attempting to create a similar addictive feedback loop.

Regulatory and Social Concerns

These gamification tactics are not without controversy. Features like “streaks” have faced significant regulatory scrutiny and legal challenges regarding their impact on minors. Research from Jon Haidt, author of The Anxious Generation, suggests that such habit-forming mechanisms were intentionally designed to drive engagement at the expense of healthy user behavior.

Can Meta Win Back the Youth Market?

While Facebook remains a primary revenue driver for Meta’s AI and metaverse investments, the platform has struggled to maintain relevance among younger users. With the demographic continuously declining, particularly in the United States, the company has pivoted through various initiatives, including a Gen Z-focused redesign and the now-defunct Facebook Campus.

Whether the “poke” will evolve into a meaningful social tool or remain a quirky relic of the platform’s early days remains to be seen. Regardless of its original, ambiguous purpose—be it flirting, catching attention, or simple annoyance—Meta is betting that turning the feature into a competitive game is the key to revitalizing Facebook’s aging user base.
