Google Tests AI to Automatically Estimate User Age in US – Ankor Tech

Google has launched a pilot program in the United States utilizing machine learning technology to automatically estimate user ages. This strategic move aims to refine content filtering and enforce safety protections across its entire ecosystem of products and services.

How Google’s Age Estimation Works

The system analyzes data linked to Google accounts to predict whether a user is under 18. This includes examining search history patterns and categories of videos consumed on YouTube. When the AI identifies a user as a minor, the account receives a notification detailing how their Google experience will be automatically adjusted to prioritize safety.

Stricter Protections for Minors

Once an account is flagged as belonging to a user under the age of 18, Google enforces a series of restrictive measures. These changes include:

  • Disabling the timeline feature in Google Maps.
  • Eliminating personalized advertising and blocking age-restricted ad categories.
  • Restricting access to adult-themed applications within the Play Store.
  • Enabling digital well-being features on YouTube, such as “go to bed” notifications and break reminders.
  • Filtering content that may negatively impact body image.

Appeals and Verification Processes

If the machine learning tool misidentifies a user’s age, Google provides an appeals process. Users can challenge the system’s determination by providing formal proof of age, such as a government-issued identification card or a selfie verification.

Expanding Global Regulatory Compliance

Google confirms that this technology has already undergone successful testing in select international markets. “Age assurance helps us ensure that adults can access the information and services they need, while also applying the right protections for our younger users. Our approach to age assurance uses a combination of age estimation and, when necessary, age verification,” the company stated in a official blog post.

The tech giant is not alone in this transition. Platforms like Instagram and Roblox have increasingly adopted AI-driven age estimation to satisfy growing regulatory demands. This shift comes as lawmakers globally intensify pressure on tech companies to protect minors, exemplified by the Online Safety Act in the U.K. and various age-gating proposals currently circulating across U.S. states.
