Bluesky Gets End-to-End Encryption via New Startup Germ – Ankor Tech

The startup Germ is officially launching a beta version of its end-to-end encrypted messaging service for the Bluesky social network. Developed over the past two years, the platform provides a more secure alternative to Bluesky’s native direct messages, with the ultimate goal of integrating its open-source protocol directly into the broader AT Protocol (ATProto) ecosystem.

Privacy-First Architecture

Unlike traditional messaging giants like WhatsApp or iMessage that rely on phone numbers, Germ leverages the AT Protocol to authenticate users. This integration allows for secure communication across Bluesky and other ATProto-powered applications like Flashes and Skylight. Users gain granular control over their privacy, including the ability to restrict incoming messages to followers only and the option to block users exclusively within Germ or across the entire ATProto network.

Leveraging Apple’s App Clips

To reduce friction, Germ utilizes Apple’s App Clips technology. Users can place a “magic link” in their Bluesky bio; when clicked by another iOS user, it launches a lightweight version of the app to facilitate an immediate, encrypted chat without requiring a full installation. The link functions as a cryptographic key, verifying the sender’s ATProto identity against their Bluesky handle.

The Team Behind the Protocol

Germ was co-founded by CEO Tessa Brown, a former Stanford communications scholar, and Mark Xue, a former Apple privacy engineer who worked on iMessage and FaceTime. Brown advocates for end-to-end encryption as a fundamental requirement for the future of healthy social media, while Xue aims to move beyond phone-number-based authentication, which he views as an outdated standard for modern digital security.

Future Roadmap and Funding

The startup currently relies on Messaging Layer Security (MLS), an IETF-approved standard, to power its encryption. While the service is free during its beta phase, the company is exploring future monetization through premium subscriptions for advanced features, such as personalized AI tools.

Supported by investors including K5 Global and Mozilla Ventures, Germ is currently focused on its iOS rollout. The team has stated that an Android version is planned for the future, pending additional fundraising efforts.
