OpenAI’s ChatGPT mobile application has officially surpassed $2 billion in global consumer spending since its launch in May 2023. According to the latest market intelligence report from Appfigures, the platform’s dominance on iOS and Android remains unchallenged, with lifetime spending 30 times higher than the combined figures of competitors like Claude, Copilot, and Grok.

Explosive Growth in 2025

The financial momentum behind ChatGPT is accelerating at a breakneck pace. In the first seven months of 2025 alone, the app generated $1.35 billion—a staggering 673% increase compared to the $174 million recorded during the same period in 2024. Currently, the app pulls in an average of $193 million monthly, a sharp rise from the $25 million monthly average observed last year.

Market Dominance vs. Competitors

ChatGPT’s mobile performance dwarfs its rivals. For instance, Grok has generated approximately $25.6 million year-to-date, with a monthly average of $3.6 million—representing just 1.9% of ChatGPT’s monthly earnings. While these figures do not encompass total corporate revenue, which includes API usage and web subscriptions, they highlight a clear trend in consumer preference within app stores.

The disparity is also visible in revenue per download. ChatGPT leads the pack with $2.91 per install, followed by Claude ($2.55), Grok ($0.75), and Copilot ($0.28).

Global Reach and User Acquisition

The United States remains the most lucrative market for OpenAI, accounting for 38% of total lifetime revenue, with an impressive $10 in spending per download. Germany follows as the second-largest revenue driver, contributing 5.3% to the total.

In terms of raw user base, ChatGPT has reached 690 million global installs. While India leads in volume—representing 13.7% of all lifetime downloads—the U.S. holds 10.3%. Average monthly global downloads have surged to 45 million, a 180% increase over the 16 million average seen in the first half of 2024. By the end of July 2025, the app had already clocked 318 million installs for the year, nearly triple the 113 million recorded during the same timeframe last year.

This data clarifies the market landscape regarding recent debates over app store visibility, as ChatGPT’s massive user base and consistent growth continue to set the industry standard for AI assistants on mobile devices.
