Pinterest CEO: Agentic AI Shopping Is Years Away – Ankor Tech

Pinterest CEO Bill Ready addressed investor concerns regarding the future of the “agentic web” during the company’s second-quarter 2025 earnings call. While the platform continues to integrate advanced technology, Ready emphasized that fully autonomous AI agents capable of shopping on behalf of users remain a distant reality.

The Future of AI-Driven Commerce

The discussion centered on how AI might disrupt the search funnel. Investors expressed apprehension that as AI models become more sophisticated at anticipating user needs, they might bypass discovery platforms like Pinterest in favor of direct, automated purchasing. Ready dismissed the immediate threat of such autonomous agents, noting that the transition for consumers to trust an AI to “run off and do everything for them” will be a long, gradual cycle, likely limited to purely utilitarian transactions.

Instead, Ready advocates for viewing Pinterest as an “AI-enabled shopping assistant.” He noted that while the company avoids using this specific branding, the user experience already reflects it. “When users say ‘Pinterest just gets me,’ it is because the app proactively makes recommendations that align with their specific taste and style,” Ready explained.

Pinterest’s “Cambrian Moment”

Pinterest is currently navigating what leadership describes as a “Cambrian moment”—a period of rapid innovation in AI-driven experiences. The company is actively deploying a suite of proprietary AI tools, including:

  • Multimodal AI models that synthesize text and imagery.
  • Advanced visual and conversational search capabilities.
  • AI-optimized advertising efficiencies.
  • Personalized recommendation engines.

Addressing Quality and Moderation Challenges

Despite the focus on innovation, the platform faces significant hurdles. User dissatisfaction has grown due to an influx of low-quality, AI-generated content. In response, Pinterest recently introduced tools to label AI-generated images and allow users to filter out generative AI pins. Furthermore, the company has dealt with criticism regarding mass user bans, which some attribute to an overreliance on automated moderation systems—a challenge currently impacting other major social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr.

Talent Acquisition and Financial Performance

Regarding human capital, Ready stated that Pinterest remains highly competitive in the war for AI talent. He believes the company’s focus on “tuning AI for positivity” and maintaining a safer, more responsible alternative to the broader social media landscape acts as a significant draw for top-tier engineers.

Financially, the market reacted with caution. Despite reporting a 17% revenue growth and reaching $998 million in sales, Pinterest’s adjusted earnings per share of 33 cents fell short of the 35-cent analyst expectation. However, the company highlighted strong demographic shifts, noting that over half of its monthly active users are now Gen Z, and the number of male users has surged by 95% year-over-year.
