Truecaller Discontinues iOS Call Recording on Sept 30 – Ankor Tech

Truecaller is officially pulling the plug on its call-recording feature for iOS devices. Starting September 30, iPhone users will no longer have access to the tool, as the Swedish tech firm shifts its strategic focus back to its core mission: combating spam and enhancing caller identification.

What You Need to Do Before the Deadline

To avoid losing important data, Truecaller is urging users to secure their existing files immediately. Recordings can be downloaded directly to local device storage, shared via email or messaging platforms, or migrated to iCloud. The company has published a dedicated support guide to assist with this transition process.

Why Truecaller is Dropping the Feature

The decision stems from the inherent technical difficulties of operating on Apple’s ecosystem. Unlike Android, iOS restricts third-party apps from native call recording. Truecaller previously bypassed this by using a complex “recording line” that merged calls—a method that proved both costly and operationally cumbersome.

Nakul Kabra, Head of iOS at Truecaller, confirmed that the company is prioritizing its Live Caller ID and automated spam-blocking capabilities. The move also follows Apple’s own integration of native call recording and AI-powered transcription in iOS 18.1, which renders third-party workarounds redundant.

Strategic Shift and Market Impact

Truecaller originally introduced call recording in June 2023 as a premium incentive to drive iPhone user subscriptions. While the feature was popular, the company’s second-quarter financial report highlights that iOS remains a massive revenue driver, accounting for 44% of its global premium earnings. With approximately 3 million subscribers worldwide, the company aims to retain its user base by doubling down on superior spam protection rather than competing with Apple’s native OS features.
