YouTube is officially retiring its legacy Trending page and the “Trending Now” list. The platform announced on Thursday that it is shifting toward category-specific charts, housed within YouTube Charts, to better reflect how modern audiences discover viral content.
A Shift Toward Granular Content Discovery
The decision marks a departure from the singular, all-encompassing list that has been a staple of the platform since 2015. YouTube data indicates that viewer habits have evolved significantly; rather than relying on one broad feed, users now engage with a diverse array of micro-trends shaped by specific fandoms and niches.
The new structure prioritizes relevance through dedicated sections, including:
YouTube confirmed that it intends to expand these categories in the coming months to include a broader range of content types.
Why the Trending Page Lost Relevance
According to the company, visits to the traditional Trending page have steadily declined over the last five years. While the 2015 iteration was designed to capture singular viral moments, today’s users find trending content through personalized algorithmic recommendations, search queries, and comment sections.
As YouTube has transitioned from a hub for amateur clips to a professional ecosystem for long-form, short-form, and media-led content, the “one-size-fits-all” approach to discovery became obsolete. By integrating these charts into the existing ecosystem, the platform aims to provide a more natural, personalized browsing experience.
Empowering Creators Through New Tools
While the front-end discovery experience is changing, YouTube maintains its commitment to creator analytics. The official blog post clarifies that the Inspiration Tab in YouTube Studio will remain unchanged, continuing to provide creators with data-driven insights to identify emerging trends relevant to their specific channels.
Furthermore, the platform is doubling down on discovery for up-and-coming talent through features like “Hype,” which allows viewers to actively amplify fresh videos they believe deserve more visibility. The company also confirmed it will continue to spotlight “Creators on the Rise” via its official YouTube channel.
These updates are scheduled to roll out to all users over the next few weeks.
