Threads Finally Gets DMs: Meta’s Big Push for Independence – Ankor Tech

Instagram Threads is officially rolling out its most-requested feature: native direct messaging. Starting this Tuesday, users worldwide can send private messages directly within the Threads app, eliminating the need to jump to Instagram to continue conversations. Alongside this update, Meta is introducing a “highlighter” tool designed to emphasize trending topics and compelling perspectives.

Core Features and Limitations

At launch, Threads DMs provide a streamlined experience focused on one-on-one communication. Users can utilize preset emoji reactions, report spam, and mute conversations. However, Meta is holding back more complex tools for future updates, including group messaging, advanced inbox filters, and granular message controls.

Privacy management is currently tied to existing account settings. Because the system is not yet fully independent, blocking a user on Threads will simultaneously block them on Instagram. Furthermore, the feature is limited to users aged 18 and older in most markets, with initial exclusions in Japan, Australia, the U.K., and the EU.

A Strategic Shift Away from Instagram

The introduction of DMs signals a strategic move to position Threads as a standalone platform, competing directly with apps like X and Bluesky. Despite relying on Instagram’s social graph at inception, Meta reports that over one-third of daily Threads users now have less than a 50% overlap between their Instagram and Threads connections.

“Instagram is for creativity, while Threads is for perspectives,” says Emily Dalton Smith, Threads VP of Product. This divergence has led the company to explore ways to decouple the two apps entirely, including testing Threads-only accounts, Facebook-integrated logins in Europe, and even web access without requiring a login.

Encryption and Future Roadmap

Unlike X, which has prioritized encrypted chats, Meta has no immediate plans to encrypt Threads DMs. According to Smith, the goal is to foster public-space community interaction rather than high-security private messaging.

The platform’s roadmap remains focused on discovery and community building. Upcoming features include:

  • Enhanced identification of top community contributors.
  • Improved search and discovery for suggested users.
  • Expanded use of the “highlighter” tool to showcase active conversations within topic feeds.

While Threads has reached a significant milestone with 350 million monthly active users, it remains a “growing” app within the Meta ecosystem. The company is currently prioritizing ad integration and AI-powered background features—such as automated headlines and summaries—over aggressive monetization strategies or AI chatbots, keeping the user experience clean and focused on organic engagement.
