Spread the love

Google officially announced on Tuesday that users can now access historical Street View imagery directly within Google Earth. This feature, previously exclusive to Google Maps, expands the platform’s capabilities by allowing users to explore locations from both a bird’s-eye perspective and at street level across different points in time.

A New Way to Experience History

The update arrives as part of the celebration for Google Earth’s 20th anniversary. It follows a significant social media trend from last year, where users flocked to Google Maps to virtually time travel. By revisiting past imagery, people have been able to reconnect with memories of loved ones or observe the physical evolution of neighborhoods and cities over the years.

Advanced AI Insights for Urban Planning

Beyond historical exploration, Google is rolling out new AI-driven environmental insights for professional users in the United States. These tools provide granular data on urban climate factors, such as tree canopy coverage.

In cities like Austin, Texas, planners can now utilize these features to identify areas with low tree density that may require cooling interventions. Furthermore, the integration of land surface temperature data allows for a clearer understanding of urban heat islands, supporting more informed decision-making in city development and environmental sustainability.

Two Decades of Global Discovery

Reflecting on its journey since launching in 2005, Google noted the platform’s immediate impact, which saw 100 million downloads in its inaugural week. The service continues to be a staple for digital exploration, with Google reporting that users searched for locations within Google Earth more than 2 billion times in the past year alone.
