Apple officially unveiled iOS 26 during WWDC 2025, introducing a comprehensive aesthetic overhaul dubbed “Liquid Glass.” This major update redefines the visual identity of the iPhone, focusing on a deep integration between system-wide UI elements and native applications.
Revamped Lock Screen and Dynamic Personalization
The Lock Screen receives a significant functional update centered on the San Francisco font. The text for the date and time now features adaptive scaling; it intelligently stretches to occupy available negative space in your background image. For instance, if your wallpaper features a subject with a clear sky, the time display adjusts its layout to fill the sky without overlapping the primary subject.
Apple is also leveraging AI to add depth to your photos. A new 3D effect makes the primary subject of a wallpaper appear to “pop out” as the user tilts their device, creating a more immersive, animated experience for saved memories.
Home Screen and Media Integration
Customization remains a priority with the Liquid Glass design language. Apple is updating its native app icons to ensure they maintain visual harmony across both Dark Mode and a new “all-clear” aesthetic. Furthermore, the Lock Screen will now support dynamic media displays, allowing artists to upload looping video clips that animate while music is playing, mirroring similar interactive experiences found in other streaming platforms.
Refining Native iOS Applications
Beyond the interface, core utilities are receiving targeted efficiency improvements:
- Camera: The interface is now more streamlined, providing faster access to aperture, brightness, and quick-toggles between video and photo modes.
- Photos: Responding to user feedback, Apple is reintroducing dedicated tabs to separate the library from specific collections.
- Safari: Web pages now benefit from an edge-to-edge flow, maximizing screen real estate.
- FaceTime & Phone: Both apps now prioritize frequent contacts. FaceTime features a new landing page with autoplaying video messages from contacts, while the Phone app merges the “Favorites” and “Contacts” tabs to centralize communication.
Enhanced Apple CarPlay Functionality
The Liquid Glass design philosophy extends to the dashboard. Apple CarPlay now supports interactive widgets, such as real-time flight status tracking, alongside improved messaging features that allow users to pin conversations and respond to texts directly from the car’s interface.
