Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially launched AWS Security Incident Response, a new service designed to drastically reduce the time businesses take to recover from cyberattacks. As global cybercrime costs are projected to reach $23 trillion by 2027—up from $8.4 trillion in 2022—this move positions AWS as a central player in the critical incident management sector.

The Growing Security Gap

Many organizations remain dangerously underprepared for digital threats. According to a recent industry poll, only 60% of companies have a formal incident response plan, and even fewer perform the regular drills necessary to ensure those plans hold up under pressure.

Hart Rossman, VP of global services security at AWS, notes that businesses struggle to scale their defense strategies because they rely on fragmented tools and disconnected teams. “AWS Security Incident Response serves as a single source of truth,” Rossman explained, aiming to streamline how teams handle account takeovers, breaches, and ransomware.

How the Service Functions

The platform operates by automatically triaging findings from Amazon GuardDuty and integrated third-party security tools. Through a centralized dashboard, users can:

  • Adjust alert settings and account permissions.
  • Monitor active incidents and historical data.
  • Track key performance metrics, such as the average time to resolution.

For organizations opting into the proactive response feature, the service creates specific permissions to monitor and investigate potential threats. Findings are remediated using a mix of automated workflows and customer-specific data. If a threat is too complex for automation, the system generates a security case and notifies the relevant stakeholders.

Competitive Edge and Market Potential

While the market is already populated by specialized startups like FireHydrant, Rootly, and Incident.io, AWS is banking on deep integration to win over customers. The service is built to work natively with existing AWS security solutions, allowing for continuous identification and prioritization of vulnerabilities.

Beyond the software, AWS is offering access to its dedicated customer incident response team. This hybrid approach allows firms to manage incidents independently or collaborate directly with AWS experts and third-party partners. As noted in the official AWS blog post, major organizations, including the PGA Tour, have already signaled plans to deploy the tool.

With the global incident response market expected to balloon from $21.61 billion to nearly $90 billion by 2030—according to Verified Market Research—this launch provides a significant growth vector for the tech giant while offering a streamlined defense mechanism for its massive cloud user base.
