Instagram Threads has officially surpassed 350 million monthly active users, marking a significant growth spurt for Meta’s microblogging platform. CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed the milestone during the company’s Q1 2025 earnings call this Wednesday, revealing a gain of 30 million users over the previous quarter.

Accelerating Growth Trajectory

The platform’s expansion is clearly accelerating. Threads added 30 million users in the first quarter of 2025, outpacing the 20 million users added during Q4 2024. To put this scale into perspective, Threads added nearly as many users in a single quarter as the total current user base of decentralized competitor Bluesky, which sits at approximately 35 million.

Competitive Landscape: Threads vs. X

Despite the rapid growth, Threads remains in a competitive race against X. On the same day as Meta’s earnings report, X CEO Linda Yaccarino stated that the platform now boasts over 600 million monthly active users, according to reports.

Meta’s Broader Ecosystem Dominance

While Threads is still in its scaling phase compared to Meta’s established giants—Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp—it is rapidly securing its position within the social media ecosystem. Meta reported that its total family of apps now serves more than 3.4 billion people on a daily basis.

Optimized Engagement and Future Outlook

Zuckerberg emphasized to investors that the current trajectory reinforces Threads’ status as a future cornerstone of Meta’s portfolio. The platform’s success is being driven by technical refinements, specifically within the recommendation systems, which have led to a 35% increase in the time users spend within the app.
