The newly launched iOS app Lately is tackling the chronic issue of time blindness by gamifying the daily commute. Designed specifically for individuals with ADHD, the app rewards users for punctuality while providing real-time alerts to ensure they depart on schedule.
Solving Time Blindness Through Gamification
Lately functions as an intelligent travel manager, sending systematic reminders at 30, 10, and 5 minutes before departure. To keep users on track, it integrates seamlessly with iPhone and Apple Watch via Live Activities, displaying a constant countdown to leave.

The core of the app is its point-based reward system, which features four distinct difficulty levels:
- Goldfish: The entry level, awarding 3 points for arriving early and 2 for being on time.
- Coffee, Grown Up, and Yoda: Progressively stricter tiers. At the “Yoda” level, the app actively penalizes tardiness by deducting 2 points.
As users accumulate points, they unlock virtual characters, providing a tangible sense of progress that is often missing from traditional calendar or alarm apps.
Targeting ADHD Challenges
Indie developer Erik MacInnis created Lately after struggling with his own time management. “For many of us, our toughest challenges to leaving on time are time blindness and poor time estimation,” MacInnis explained. Unlike general task managers such as Structured or TickTick, which focus on broad productivity, Lately is engineered specifically to bridge the gap between planning and physical departure.
Current Limitations and Future Roadmap
While the app is highly effective for driving and walking, it currently lacks specialized transit data for public transportation or cycling in major urban centers. However, the developer has outlined an ambitious roadmap to expand the platform’s utility:
- Social Integration: Future updates will allow users to automatically notify friends of their status, including departure times and proximity alerts.
- Cross-Platform Support: An Android version is currently in development.
Lately is available for free on the App Store. A premium tier, priced at $3 per month or $10 per year, offers advanced features including recurring trip scheduling and custom difficulty settings. By leveraging behavioral psychology—similar to the success seen in self-care apps like Finch—Lately provides a structured, rewarding framework for those who find traditional time management tools uninspiring or ineffective.
