Apple Brings DIY Repairs to iPad Users
Apple officially expanded its Self Service Repair program to the iPad on Wednesday. This initiative grants device owners direct access to authentic Apple parts, specialized tools, repair manuals, and Apple Diagnostics troubleshooting software, allowing for professional-grade repairs from the comfort of their homes.
Supported Models and Available Components
Beginning Thursday, owners of specific iPad models can order official repair kits and individual components. The program covers the following devices:
- iPad Air (M2 and later)
- iPad Pro (M4)
- iPad mini (A17 Pro)
- iPad (A16)
Users will be able to source essential replacement parts, including displays, batteries, cameras, and external charging ports, ensuring that the hardware remains functional for a longer lifecycle.
Commitment to Product Longevity
Brian Naumann, Apple’s vice president of AppleCare, emphasized that the expansion is part of the company’s broader effort to increase product durability. “Our goal is to create the world’s greatest products that last as long as possible,” Naumann stated. By providing customers with the same documentation and resources used by Apple Store technicians and Authorized Service Providers, the company aims to extend device utility without sacrificing safety, security, or data privacy.
Program Growth and Global Reach
Since its inception in 2022, the Self Service Repair program has grown significantly to support 65 different Apple products. The catalog now encompasses a wide range of hardware, including the iPhone 16e, MacBook Air, and Mac Studio. Furthermore, Apple confirmed that Canada is slated to become the 34th country to participate in the program, marking a continued push for global accessibility.
Updates to Genuine Parts Distribution
In addition to consumer-facing repairs, Apple provided updates regarding its Genuine Parts Distributor program. This initiative allows independent mobile repair professionals to procure authentic components through authorized third-party distributors. Current partners include MobileSentrix in the U.S., alongside MobileSentrix and Mobileparts.shop in Europe. While these distributors currently focus on iPhone components like batteries and displays, the inventory will expand to include iPad parts starting tomorrow.
