Deutsche Telekom (DT) has officially announced the development of a dedicated “AI Phone,” a low-cost handset engineered in strategic partnership with Perplexity, Picsart, and other tech innovators. Unveiled at MWC in Barcelona, the device is scheduled for a market debut in 2026 with a price point below $1,000, initially targeting the European consumer segment.

A Strategic Shift Toward AI Agents
Claudia Nemat, a DT board member overseeing technology and innovation, emphasized that the company is transitioning into an AI-first organization. While DT is not building foundational large language models, the focus is squarely on developing sophisticated AI agents. The device will feature “Magenta AI,” a proprietary assistant, alongside deep integrations with Perplexity, Google Cloud, and ElevenLabs.
The core proposition is a proactive user experience. Unlike traditional assistants that wait for input, this phone aims to automate tasks—such as booking flights, managing reservations, and handling emails—directly from the lock screen.
Perplexity: From Answer Engine to Action Machine
For the $9 billion-valued startup Perplexity, this partnership represents a major evolution. CEO Aravind Srinivas stated that the company is moving beyond being a mere “answer machine” to becoming an “action machine.” By embedding its technology directly into the handset, Perplexity seeks to differentiate itself from competitors like OpenAI and Google’s Gemini, positioning its AI as a native, always-on utility rather than a reactive tool.
Telecoms vs. Big Tech: The Hardware Struggle
The move is the latest attempt by a major telecommunications carrier to reclaim control over the customer relationship. Historically, carriers have struggled to compete with the hardware and software ecosystems of Apple and Google. Previous attempts, such as partnerships with Mozilla or social media giants, have largely failed to disrupt the market dominance of established smartphone giants.
What to Expect in 2026
While specific hardware specifications remain under wraps, the concept suggests an Android-based interface. Deutsche Telekom has confirmed that:
- The device will launch in the second half of 2026.
- Magenta AI will also be released as an app for existing DT customers (covering roughly 300 million users) on Android and iOS.
- The phone experience will prioritize “AI baked into the lock screen” for maximum accessibility.
Whether this collaboration can overcome the barriers that led even tech giants like LG to exit the smartphone business remains to be seen. However, the partnership highlights a growing trend: legacy telecom companies view AI as a potential panacea for stagnant growth, while agile startups are actively seeking “safe moats” to protect their market share against Big Tech.
