Meta and Spotify are currently exploring a deeper integration that could transform how users share their listening habits on Instagram. Recent findings suggest the companies are testing a feature for Instagram Notes that allows for the continuous, real-time broadcasting of whatever music a user is currently streaming.

How the Integration Works

The functionality was first identified by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi. According to screenshots shared on Threads, the feature introduces an option to “continuously share” music directly from Spotify. Unlike the current method, which requires users to manually select individual tracks from Instagram’s internal catalog, this automation would provide a seamless stream of data. Users maintain control over the experience, with the interface indicating that sharing can be disabled at any time.

Building on Existing Social Music Tools

This potential update expands upon a feature introduced in 2022, which allowed users to post 30-second song clips to their Notes—a section located above the Instagram inbox. While Instagram has supported music clips in various global markets, a direct partnership with Spotify would automate the process, ensuring content remains fresh even when users are navigating other applications.

Market Strategy and Competition

The move aligns with broader industry trends regarding music discovery. Spotify has long experimented with social features, such as its desktop “Friend Activity” tab and internal tests for real-time mobile streaming updates. By integrating with Instagram, Spotify acknowledges that music discovery often happens on established social platforms where users are already highly engaged.

Technical evidence of this collaboration has been mounting. Technologist Chris Messina noted that Instagram recently incorporated a “SpotifyiOS.framework” component into its app architecture. Furthermore, this initiative could be a strategic play to bolster Instagram’s music features, potentially challenging TikTok’s dominance in the music discovery space.

A Shared History and Common Rivals

Meta and Spotify have a history of collaboration, including the 2021 launch of a Facebook miniplayer. Beyond product development, both companies share a complicated relationship with Apple. Both entities have publicly criticized Apple’s App Store policies regarding in-app payments and revenue commissions. Additionally, Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) changes significantly impacted Meta’s advertising revenue, while Apple Music remains a primary competitor to Spotify’s streaming service.

As of now, both Meta and Spotify have declined to comment on the development. Given that tech giants frequently test concepts that may never reach a public release, it remains to be seen if this continuous sharing feature will move beyond the experimental phase.
