Vimeo has officially joined the ranks of industry leaders like YouTube, TikTok, and Meta by implementing a mandatory disclosure policy for AI-generated content. Announced this Wednesday, the update requires creators to explicitly inform viewers whenever realistic video content is produced, synthesized, or manipulated using generative AI tools.

New Transparency Standards for Creators

The platform’s updated terms of service and community guidelines are designed to mitigate the risks of misinformation. As generative AI becomes increasingly sophisticated, distinguishing between authentic footage and synthetic media has become a critical challenge for digital platforms. Under the new policy, videos that portray celebrities saying or doing things they did not perform in reality, or those featuring altered footage of real-world events and locations, must carry an AI label.

However, the policy includes specific exemptions. Creators are not required to label content that is clearly unrealistic, such as stylized animation, videos featuring obvious visual effects, or projects where AI was used solely for minor production assistance.

How the Labeling System Works

For now, Vimeo is relying on a voluntary disclosure model. When uploading or editing a video, creators must check a box to confirm the use of AI, specifying whether the technology was applied to audio, visuals, or both. Once selected, a distinct label appears at the bottom of the video player to notify the audience.

While the current process is manual, the company is actively developing an automated detection system. CEO Philip Moyer highlighted in an official blog post that the long-term objective is to deploy technology that can reliably identify AI-generated media, thereby increasing transparency and reducing the operational burden on content creators.

Protecting Creators from Unauthorized Training

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by Vimeo to navigate the ethics of artificial intelligence. Since taking office in April, Moyer has emphasized the platform’s commitment to protecting user-generated content from unauthorized exploitation.

In a separate official statement, the company confirmed that it strictly prohibits AI firms from training generative models on videos hosted on its platform. This stance aligns with other major tech players, such as YouTube, whose leadership has explicitly warned that using platform data to train models like OpenAI’s Sora constitutes a direct violation of their terms of service.
