In a historic industry shift, YouTube has officially surpassed the combined advertising revenue of major legacy media conglomerates—Disney, NBC, Paramount, and Warner Bros. Discovery—in 2025. According to data from research firm Moffett Nathanson, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, YouTube generated $40.4 billion in ad revenue, eclipsing the collective $37.8 billion haul of these four entertainment titans.
A Dramatic Turnaround in Media Dominance
This achievement represents a significant reversal of fortunes. In 2024, YouTube’s ad revenue of $36.1 billion trailed behind the $41.8 billion earned by the combined Hollywood studios. The rapid pivot highlights a fundamental change in global content consumption, as advertisers increasingly pivot away from traditional linear television toward the creator-led economy.
While legacy studios grapple with shrinking audiences and the exorbitant production costs associated with prestige film and television, YouTube has maintained steady momentum. Despite heavy investments in their own streaming platforms, traditional media companies are finding it difficult to match the scale and engagement levels of Google’s video giant.
Beyond Advertising: The Revenue Ecosystem
YouTube’s financial success extends well beyond traditional advertising. Last month, parent company Alphabet confirmed that YouTube’s total annual revenue reached $60 billion in 2025. This figure is bolstered by a diverse subscription portfolio, including YouTube TV, YouTube Premium, YouTube Music, and the NFL Sunday Ticket.
For perspective, this total revenue significantly outperforms Netflix, which reported $45.2 billion in revenue for the same period. While Disney’s broader media business reached $60.9 billion when including its extensive subscription services, YouTube’s ability to scale both ad and subscription models simultaneously positions it as a dominant force in the digital landscape.
The Competitive Landscape and AI Integration
Despite this milestone, YouTube still faces stiff competition from other tech giants. Meta remains the leader in the digital advertising space, having secured $196.2 billion in ad revenue throughout 2025. However, YouTube’s Q4 ad performance of $11.4 billion underscores its continued appeal to brands targeting younger, highly engaged demographics.
Prioritizing Platform Integrity
As the platform scales, YouTube is doubling down on AI-driven safety measures. The company recently expanded its likeness-detection technology to a pilot group of government officials, journalists, and politicians. This initiative is designed to identify and mitigate AI-generated deepfakes, granting users the ability to request the removal of content that violates platform policies regarding deceptive media.
