The ChatGPT mobile application has officially surpassed $3 billion in global consumer spending, according to new data from app intelligence firm Appfigures. This landmark figure encompasses total revenue generated across iOS and Android platforms since the app’s initial launch in May 2023.

Explosive Revenue Growth in 2025
The vast majority of this revenue was realized over the past twelve months. Consumers spent an estimated $2.48 billion on the mobile app in 2025 alone, marking a massive 408% increase compared to the $487 million recorded in 2024. In its debut year, 2023, the application generated $42.9 million, setting the stage for a 1,036% growth trajectory heading into 2024.

Outpacing Industry Giants
ChatGPT’s ascent has been significantly faster than that of other major digital platforms. It took the AI app only 31 months to reach the $3 billion milestone. By comparison, TikTok required 58 months to achieve the same figure. Streaming services also lagged behind, with Disney+ hitting the mark in 42 months and HBO Max taking 46 months.

Competitive Landscape: The Rise of Grok
While ChatGPT leads the pack, xAI’s Grok is demonstrating a similar revenue trajectory among AI rivals. After its initial release to X Premium Plus subscribers in late 2023 and subsequent broader rollout, Grok is currently the closest competitor in matching ChatGPT’s cumulative revenue pace relative to their respective monetization timelines.

Diversifying Revenue Streams
The $3 billion figure is driven largely by premium subscriptions like ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) and ChatGPT Pro ($200/month). However, the future of AI profitability extends beyond subscriptions. OpenAI recently launched an app store with plans for future monetization, and reports suggest the potential introduction of advertisements within the platform.
Industry peers are pursuing different strategies: Google is actively integrating AI into its search ad infrastructure—spanning AI Overviews and shopping features—while Anthropic is aggressively targeting the enterprise sector, with projections aiming for $70 billion in revenue by 2028.
