This update enables Ring devices to autonomously manage doorstep interactions, ranging from handling package deliveries and screening sales representatives to recording messages from friends and family when homeowners are unavailable.
How Ring’s Conversational AI Works
The feature, dubbed “Greetings,” leverages sophisticated visual analysis to determine the nature of a visitor. By evaluating apparel, physical actions, and items being carried, the system tailors its response based on pre-set user instructions. For instance, if the AI detects a courier in a delivery uniform, it can provide specific drop-off locations or direct them toward refreshments left for service workers.
Managing Deliveries and Unwanted Solicitations
The AI capability extends beyond simple greetings. If a delivery requires a signature, Alexa can inquire when the courier intends to return and relay that information directly to the user. Similarly, homeowners can configure custom protocols for unwanted visitors, such as directing sales representatives to leave the property politely without requiring direct intervention from the resident.
Privacy and Technical Limitations
While the technology offers significant convenience, it is not without risks. The system may occasionally misidentify visitors based on their attire. For example, a friend working in the logistics industry arriving in a company uniform might trigger a delivery-specific greeting rather than a personal one.
To address privacy concerns, Amazon clarifies that Greetings utilizes video descriptions to analyze the scene rather than identifying specific individuals. This distinguishes the feature from the controversial “Familiar Faces” function, which allows users to catalog up to 50 specific individuals for identification in the Ring app timeline.
Availability and Compatibility
The new Alexa+ functionality is currently rolling out to early access customers in the United States and Canada. To utilize the feature, users must meet the following requirements:
- Hardware: Compatible with Ring Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen) and Ring Wired Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen).
- Subscription: Requires an active Ring Premium Plan.
