Google has officially expanded the capabilities of NotebookLM, its AI-driven research and note-taking assistant. The latest update introduces a robust “Deep Research” tool designed to automate complex online investigations, alongside broader file compatibility to streamline user workflows.

Automating Complex Research Tasks

The new “Deep Research” feature functions as a dedicated digital researcher. Users provide a query, and the system generates a comprehensive research plan, traverses the web to gather data, and compiles a source-grounded report. This report can be integrated directly into a user’s notebook, allowing for the creation of a structured knowledge base without exiting the platform.

While the AI processes deep research in the background, users maintain the ability to continue adding other sources to their project. To utilize this, users can initiate a search in the source panel, select “Web” as the source, and choose between “Deep Research” for in-depth analysis or “Fast Research” for quicker, concise results.

Expanded File Support and Integration

Beyond the new research assistant, Google has significantly increased the utility of NotebookLM by expanding supported file types. Users can now upload:

  • Google Sheets
  • Google Drive files via URLs
  • PDFs directly from Google Drive
  • Microsoft Word documents

This update enables more advanced data handling, such as generating summaries directly from spreadsheets or importing multiple Drive files via link sharing. Google expects these features to be available to all users within the next week.

Evolution of the NotebookLM Ecosystem

Since its late 2023 debut, NotebookLM has rapidly evolved from a basic note-taking tool into a comprehensive AI research suite. Previous major updates included “Video Overviews,” which transforms multimedia inputs into visual presentations, and the popular “Audio Overviews” feature, which converts text-heavy documents like legal briefs or academic papers into AI-generated podcasts.

With the release of dedicated Android and iOS applications earlier this year, Google continues to position NotebookLM as a primary workspace for researchers and students alike, bridging the gap between desktop power and mobile accessibility.
