Google has officially introduced a dedicated “Images” tab within its mobile app for iOS and Android, directly challenging Pinterest’s dominance in visual discovery. Announced this Wednesday, the feature provides a personalized feed of inspirational imagery tailored to individual user interests, aiming to become the primary destination for creative planning.
Personalized Visual Discovery
The new feature, accessible via an icon at the bottom of the Google Search app, delivers daily updates designed to spark creativity. Whether users are planning travel itineraries, organizing events, redecorating living spaces, or tracking fashion trends, the feed serves as a centralized hub for visual exploration.
Functionality extends beyond passive browsing. Users can actively search for specific visual content and save their preferred images directly into collections, mirroring the core utility that has long defined the Pinterest experience.
Strategic Shift in Search Engagement
This rollout arrives as Google faces mounting pressure from AI-driven search competitors that threaten its traditional advertising model. By increasing the time users spend inside the Google app, the company aims to deepen engagement and reclaim territory lost to social platforms like Instagram and Pinterest.
Furthermore, the new tab creates a prime surface for monetization. Industry reports have already identified tests involving an ads carousel within mobile image results, suggesting that integrated advertising will likely become a fixture of this new interface.
Building on Previous Innovations
While Google previously introduced a “Collections” feature in 2018, that tool was broad, encompassing websites, products, and map locations. The new dedicated tab represents a pivot toward a more refined, image-centric experience. By leveraging existing AI capabilities, Google is refining how it suggests and organizes visual content for its user base.
Google confirmed that the update is scheduled to roll out to U.S. users on iOS and Android over the coming weeks. A timeline for a broader, global release has not yet been disclosed.
