New Subscription Tiers and Pricing

The new rollout replaces previous options like the Duo and Family plans in these regions. The tiered structure is designed to offer specific features at varying price points:

  • Premium Lite: Priced at ₹139 ($1.57) per month, focusing on ad-free listening with 160 kbps audio quality.
  • Premium Standard: Priced at ₹199 ($2.25) per month, including offline support and 320 kbps audio quality.
  • Premium Platinum: The flagship tier at ₹299 ($3.37) per month, introducing the long-awaited Lossless audio tier and multi-seat account sharing for up to three users.

Exclusive Features for Platinum Subscribers

Beyond high-fidelity audio, the Platinum tier positions itself as the premium hub for Spotify’s latest AI-driven tools. Subscribers gain full access to the AI DJ, which provides interactive commentary and song requests, as well as the platform’s AI-powered playlist generation tool.

Furthermore, Platinum users can leverage integration with professional DJ software, including rekordbox, Serato, and djay. This allows users to import their library directly into these platforms to craft professional-grade sets and mixes.

Market Impact and Global Strategy

While many of these features have been accessible in North America and Europe for some time, this launch marks the first time users in these five specific regions have official access to the high-tier feature set. Industry analysts have long anticipated the arrival of a “super-premium” tier, and this rollout serves as a testing ground for a potential global expansion of the Lossless service.

Current subscribers will see their existing plans carry over for the time being. However, the landscape for new subscribers has shifted significantly. In markets like India, the pricing structure has become more aggressive; for instance, the previous price of the individual Standard plan now corresponds to the entry-level “Lite” tier. Additionally, the removal of the traditional Family plan options means that users seeking account-sharing capabilities are now funneled exclusively into the more expensive Platinum tier.

These changes reflect Spotify’s broader global strategy, which has seen the company steadily increase subscription costs in major markets, including a recurring price hike in the U.S. from $9.99 to $11.99 over the last two years.
