Kevin Mandia, the visionary founder of cybersecurity giant Mandiant—which he sold to Google for $5.4 billion in 2022—has officially launched his next venture. His new AI-native security startup, Armadin, has secured $189.9 million in a combined seed and Series A funding round. This massive infusion of capital, led by Accel, marks what the firm claims is a record-breaking start for a cybersecurity company at this stage.
A Funding Milestone for Early-Stage Security
The funding round saw significant participation from industry heavyweights, including GV, Kleiner Perkins, Menlo Ventures, 8VC, Ballistic Ventures, and In-Q-Tel, the venture arm of the CIA. While other firms have secured larger Series A rounds in the past, the company states that this represents an unprecedented total for a security startup emerging directly from the gate.
For context, while companies like 1Password and OneTrust raised $200 million in Series A funding in 2019, those organizations were already years into their operations and established in their respective markets. Mandia’s latest project, by contrast, is launching with this capital to address the immediate, escalating threat of AI-driven cyber warfare.
The Rise of Autonomous AI Hackers
Mandia, who previously served as a venture capitalist at Ballistic Ventures, founded Armadin with a singular focus: developing autonomous cybersecurity agents. These software agents are designed to learn and neutralize threats in real-time, functioning entirely without human intervention.
The urgency behind Armadin stems from a clear vision of the future. Mandia warned CNBC that the era of autonomous AI hackers is imminent. He emphasizes that AI on the offensive side will be capable of thinking, learning, and adapting, effectively compressing attack cycles that previously took days into mere minutes.
Building an ‘Agentic Army’ for Defense
Armadin’s core mission is to arm “white hat” security professionals with their own automated agentic armies to counter the rising tide of AI-powered attacks from malicious actors. To achieve this, Mandia has assembled a high-caliber leadership team, including:
- Travis Lanham: Former Principal Engineer at Google Cloud Security.
- Evan Peña: Former Mandiant executive.
- David Slater: Former Google SecOps engineer.
By leveraging this expertise, Armadin aims to flip the script on digital threats, ensuring that the defenders are as sophisticated and autonomous as the adversaries they face.
