Mozilla has officially integrated Perplexity’s AI-powered answer engine into the Firefox browser, providing users with a new way to navigate the web. Announced this Tuesday, the update allows desktop users to replace their traditional search engine with Perplexity, shifting from standard link-based results to a conversational, citation-backed search experience.
Global Rollout After Successful Testing
This move follows a successful pilot program that initially limited access to select markets, including the U.S., U.K., and Germany. While the integration was previously under evaluation, Mozilla confirmed that positive user engagement has prompted a full global release for desktop versions of the browser, with mobile availability scheduled for the coming months.

How to Use AI Search in Firefox
Once the feature is enabled, users can access Perplexity directly through the unified search button in the address bar. This design allows for seamless switching between standard search providers like Google, Bing, or DuckDuckGo and the AI-driven engine. Users can manage these preferences via the browser’s settings menu.
Mozilla selected Perplexity for this integration partly due to the startup’s data privacy commitments, noting that the service does not sell or share personal user information. The organization has indicated that if this implementation continues to perform well, it may expand to include additional AI search alternatives in future updates.
New Features: Profiles and Visual Search
Alongside the Perplexity integration, Mozilla is rolling out its browser profiles to the entire user base. This feature enables users to maintain separate browser configurations for specific needs, such as distinct environments for work, personal use, or education.
Furthermore, the company continues to refine its search capabilities by testing Google Lens integration. This visual search feature remains available for desktop users who maintain Google as their default search provider, signaling Mozilla’s ongoing commitment to diversifying search functionality within the Firefox ecosystem.
