Vimeo, the prominent video-hosting platform, has initiated a round of global layoffs shortly after its $1.38 billion acquisition by the Italian tech conglomerate Bending Spoons. The workforce reduction follows the closure of an all-cash deal finalized last year, marking a significant transition for the 20-year-old company.

Scale of the Workforce Reduction

While Bending Spoons confirmed the layoffs to Business Insider, the company has declined to disclose the exact number of employees affected. However, reports from The Verge indicate that a “large portion” of the workforce is impacted. This aligns with public statements from former executives, including Vimeo’s former VP of Global Brand and Creative, who confirmed via LinkedIn that he and a significant segment of the staff were affected by the cuts.

Strategic Pivot and Market Challenges

Founded in 2004, Vimeo has long struggled to maintain market share against the dominance of YouTube. In a bid to remain competitive, the platform has aggressively pivoted toward artificial intelligence. In 2023, the company unveiled AI-powered script-writing and editing tools to streamline production workflows. This strategy continued into October, with the release of further AI-powered creator tools designed to integrate filmmaker content into automated AI processes.

The Bending Spoons Expansion

Vimeo is the latest addition to a growing portfolio of tech platforms acquired by Bending Spoons. The conglomerate has been highly active in the M&A space, having previously secured ownership of several well-known services, including Meetup, Evernote, and WeTransfer. Representatives from both Vimeo and Bending Spoons have been contacted for further commentary on the future trajectory of the platform.
