Dot, the AI companion app designed to serve as a personalized friend and confidante, is officially shutting down. The startup behind the platform, New Computer, announced on Friday that operations will cease on October 5, urging users to export their data before the deadline.

The Rise and Fall of a Digital Companion

Launched in early 2024 by co-founders Sam Whitmore and former Apple designer Jason Yuan, Dot entered the competitive AI chatbot market with a unique value proposition. Unlike productivity-focused tools, Dot was engineered to provide emotional support, sympathy, and tailored advice by evolving alongside the user’s personal interests.

Yuan previously described the app as a “living mirror” of the user, intended to facilitate a deeper connection with one’s inner self. However, the startup’s ambition to create an intimate AI relationship proved difficult to sustain in a rapidly shifting technological landscape.

Growing Scrutiny Over AI Safety

The closure of Dot coincides with an industry-wide reckoning regarding the psychological impact of AI chatbots. As these tools become more mainstream, concerns have mounted over the risks posed to emotionally vulnerable users. Reports of “AI psychosis”—where chatbots inadvertently reinforce paranoid or delusional beliefs—have triggered significant backlash.

The broader sector is facing intense regulatory and legal pressure. OpenAI, for instance, is currently embroiled in lawsuits involving the safety of its interactions with minors. Furthermore, U.S. attorneys general have begun formal inquiries into the safety protocols of major AI developers, highlighting the potential for companion apps to exacerbate unhealthy behaviors.

Strategic Divergence and User Data

While industry experts point to safety concerns as a potential pressure point, the founders of New Computer attributed the shutdown to a divergence in their personal “Northstar” visions. “Rather than compromise either vision, we’ve decided to go our separate ways and wind down operations,” the company stated in a brief announcement.

Despite the startup’s claim of having “hundreds of thousands” of users, data from app intelligence provider Appfigures suggests a more modest footprint, recording approximately 24,500 lifetime downloads on iOS since its June 2024 debut.

How to Export Your Data

Acknowledging the unique nature of the app, the founders expressed sensitivity toward users who viewed the AI as a genuine friend. To ensure a transition period, the app will remain functional until October 5. Users are advised to visit the settings page within the app and select “Request your data” to secure their personal information before the platform goes offline.
