Roku Expands Howdy Strategy to Challenge Streaming Giants

Roku CEO Anthony Wood confirmed at CES 2026 that the company plans to expand its low-cost streaming service, Howdy, beyond its own hardware. Launched in August for $2.99 per month, the ad-free platform is positioned to capture a market segment increasingly abandoned by major competitors as they hike subscription prices and increase ad density.

Addressing the Gap in Affordable Streaming

During the Variety Entertainment Summit at CES, Wood highlighted the strategic vacuum left by industry leaders. As major streaming services pivot toward aggressive monetization through price hikes and heavier ad loads, the original promise of affordable, uninterrupted entertainment has largely vanished.

“The part of the market where it actually started—low-cost and no ads—is gone now,” Wood stated. “There are no streaming services that address that portion of the market.” By offering a streamlined, budget-friendly experience, Roku aims to reclaim this specific demographic of cost-conscious viewers.

Multi-Platform Ambitions

While Howdy debuted exclusively on Roku devices, the company has confirmed its intent to move “off-platform.” Although specific distribution channels remain unconfirmed, Wood emphasized a broad vision for the service’s future.

When pressed on whether this expansion includes mobile applications and web browsers, Wood clarified that while the company is not yet disclosing specific endpoints, the overarching goal is to “distribute it everywhere.” This indicates a shift in Roku’s strategy, moving from a hardware-centric ecosystem to a more aggressive, device-agnostic content provider model.

Future Growth Potential

Despite declining to share current subscriber metrics, the Roku executive expressed high confidence in the service’s trajectory. “I think if I just look at the market, it’s going to be a big streaming service,” Wood remarked. By decoupling the service from Roku’s proprietary ecosystem, the company is positioning Howdy to compete directly with established giants across all major mobile and connected TV platforms.
