Illinois authorities have charged Tynesha McCarty-Wroten, a TikTok creator known as “Tea Tyme,” following a fatal collision that occurred while she was livestreaming behind the wheel. The Zion Police Department confirmed that McCarty-Wroten faces two felony counts: reckless homicide and aggravated use of a communications device resulting in death, after striking and killing a pedestrian.
The Tragic Incident Captured on Video
The incident gained widespread attention after a video—subsequently reshared across various social media platforms—captured the moment of impact. In the footage, a woman identified as McCarty-Wroten is seen speaking into her phone while driving. The video records a loud thud, followed by a child off-camera asking, “What was that?” to which the driver responds, “I hit somebody.”
Evidence Points to Traffic Violation
According to reports from The New York Times, investigators utilized surveillance footage to reconstruct the event. The evidence indicates that McCarty-Wroten’s vehicle entered the intersection against a red light. Authorities noted that she appeared to make no attempt to slow down or alter her path before colliding with the pedestrian, Darren Lucas.
Legal Defense Strategy
Darren Lucas was transported to a local hospital following the collision, where he was later pronounced dead. In response to the felony charges, McCarty-Wroten’s legal counsel stated that they intend to demonstrate in court that the incident was a “negligent act” rather than an intentional or reckless one. The case highlights the ongoing dangers of mobile device usage while operating a motor vehicle.
