For the first time in history, streaming services have officially eclipsed the combined viewership of cable and broadcast television in the United States. According to the latest Nielsen report, this shift marks a definitive turning point in how American audiences consume media.

A Historic Shift in Media Consumption

Data from May reveals that streaming platforms captured a record-breaking 44.8% of total television usage. In contrast, traditional cable and network television combined accounted for 44.2% of viewership, signaling that digital platforms have officially seized the majority share of the domestic TV market.

The Decline of Traditional Television

The transition away from linear television has been rapid and consistent. Since May 2021, streaming usage has surged by 71%. During that same period, traditional broadcast viewership plummeted by 21%, while cable television suffered a significant 39% decline in audience engagement.

Market Leaders and the Rise of Free Streaming

Within the streaming landscape, specific platforms are dominating the competition:

  • YouTube: Leads the sector with 12.5% of total TV viewership.
  • Netflix: Maintains a strong second position, capturing 7.5% of the total share.

A critical factor in this growth is the increasing popularity of ad-supported, free streaming services. Platforms such as PlutoTV, the Roku Channel, and Tubi have become essential pillars of the ecosystem, collectively accounting for 5.7% of all television viewing time in May.
