Facebook to Convert All Videos Into Reels – Ankor Tech

Facebook officially announced on Tuesday a major overhaul of its video strategy: every video uploaded to the platform will soon be categorized and shared as a Reel. This transition eliminates the distinction between standard video posts and Reels, regardless of video length or orientation.

Streamlining the Video Experience

The platform is set to rename its existing “Video” tab to “Reels,” centralizing all video content under a single format. Meta, the parent company, confirms that while the infrastructure is changing, the underlying algorithm for video recommendations will remain unaffected by this update.

Facebook Reels interface update

In the coming months, the manual choice between uploading a video or a Reel will disappear. The system will automatically convert all uploads into the Reels format, effectively removing current restrictions that limit Reels to 90 seconds. This move mirrors Instagram’s 2022 strategy, which began automatically converting video posts under 15 minutes into the Reels format.

Unified Publishing and Creative Tools

According to a company blog post, the goal is to simplify the creative workflow. “Previously, you’d upload a video to Feed or post a reel using different creative flows and tools for each format,” Facebook stated. “Now, we’re bringing these experiences together with a simplified publishing flow that gives you access to even more creative tools.”

Potential User Friction and Privacy

While the update aims for efficiency, it introduces potential challenges for creators. Users who prefer horizontal video formats may face display issues when their content is forced into the vertical Reels interface. Additionally, the blending of long-form content with short-form clips may disrupt the viewing experience for some segments of the audience.

Addressing privacy concerns, Facebook is synchronizing audience settings between the Feed and Reels. When users begin posting under the new system, they will be prompted to confirm their privacy preferences, allowing them to restrict visibility to “everyone,” “friends,” or specific groups.

Global Rollout Timeline

Despite the shift toward a Reels-centric model, Facebook emphasizes that the platform will continue to support diverse content, including long-form videos and Live broadcasts. The company plans to roll out these changes gradually on a global scale over the next several months.
