Apple is integrating artificial intelligence into the App Store to revolutionize how users discover applications. Announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 25), the new “App Store Tags” feature utilizes large language models to automatically categorize apps based on specific features and functionalities.

How AI-Generated Tags Improve Search

The new tagging system is designed to surface information that is frequently obscured within app descriptions, metadata, or screenshots. By analyzing these elements, Apple’s AI generates descriptive labels that appear directly on search results and category pages.

When a user taps on a specific tag, the App Store will navigate them to a curated collection of similar applications. This functionality acts as an extension of the existing “you might also like” recommendations, providing a more intuitive browsing experience.

Quality Control and Developer Autonomy

While the initial generation of these tags is automated via AI, Apple has implemented a human-review process to ensure accuracy before labels go live. Despite this, developers retain full editorial control.

Through the App Store Connect platform, developers can access a dedicated management page to monitor, edit, or remove any tags associated with their products. This ensures that the AI-generated labels remain aligned with the developer’s intended positioning for their app.

Expanding the App Store Ecosystem

This initiative follows Apple’s previous integration of AI, which already summarizes user reviews into concise, readable paragraphs. Beyond tagging, Apple is rolling out several additional updates to the developer ecosystem:

  • Custom Product Pages: Developers can now trigger specific landing pages based on user-searched keywords.
  • Enhanced Nutrition Labels: Apple is expanding its app privacy and data transparency labels, including new age-range categories.
  • Broadened Offer Codes: The company is extending support for promotional offer codes to include consumables, non-consumables, and non-renewing subscriptions.

These updates signal a broader strategy to refine the App Store’s monetization and discovery mechanics, balancing automated intelligence with developer-led customization to improve overall user engagement.
