Apple is set to significantly upgrade its Image Playground app by integrating ChatGPT, aiming to resolve widespread user dissatisfaction regarding the tool’s limited capabilities and inconsistent output quality. The announcement, made during this year’s WWDC, marks a strategic shift to elevate the app from a niche feature to a competitive AI image generator.
Addressing User Criticism and Technical Flaws
Since its initial launch, Image Playground has faced heavy skepticism. Users frequently reported technical limitations and subpar results that failed to meet basic expectations.
Reports included glaring errors, such as the generation of hands with six fingers, and a frustrating inability to process simple prompts like “old man” or “flower.” While some users found the experience engaging, many others questioned the utility of the app compared to more robust, industry-standard AI tools.

Expanding Creative Horizons with New Styles
The integration of ChatGPT enables Image Playground to move beyond its previous emoji-like aesthetic. Users will now have access to a broader palette of professional-grade styles, categorized under a new “ChatGPT style” banner. The expanded list includes:
- Oil Painting
- Watercolor
- Vector
- Anime
Additionally, a new “Any Style” option empowers users to provide specific descriptive prompts, offering greater creative control than the original, restricted selection of Animation, Illustration, Sketch, and Genmoji styles.
Privacy and Strategic Implementation
Apple has confirmed that the process involves sending user descriptions to ChatGPT to facilitate image generation. Crucially, the company emphasizes that no data will be shared with the platform without explicit user permission.
This move is part of a broader strategy to embed OpenAI’s technology across the Apple ecosystem. Following the implementation of ChatGPT within Siri—where it assists with complex queries—and its integration into system-wide “Writing Tools” for summarizing and rewriting text, Image Playground serves as the latest frontier for this collaboration.
The updated Image Playground is scheduled for release alongside iOS 26 this fall.
