Automattic, the parent company behind WordPress.com, has officially acquired the relationship-management startup Clay. The deal, which closed last week, follows a series of strategic communication-focused acquisitions by the company, including Beeper and Texts.com.

Building a Smarter Identity Layer
Launched in 2021, Clay functions as an intelligent personal CRM and address book. By aggregating data from platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, WhatsApp, X, and various calendars, it provides users with a comprehensive view of their professional and personal networks. The tool tracks job changes, relocations, and recent social activity, while allowing users to log specific details—such as meeting context or personal notes—within a unified timeline.
The integration of AI, specifically the “Nexus” helper, allows users to query their network for actionable insights, such as identifying key contacts at specific organizations or networking opportunities during travel.

Strategic Integration with Automattic
Financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed, though Clay had previously secured over $9 million in venture capital from investors such as General Catalyst and Forerunner Ventures. The startup’s team is joining Automattic’s “Other Bets” division, a unit that currently oversees Beeper and Gravatar.
Automattic plans to leverage Clay’s technology to build a robust identity layer across its ecosystem. A primary objective is integrating Clay with the universal chat app Beeper. While specific timelines for these integrations have not been finalized, the long-term vision is to create a toolset that transcends individual platforms.
Future of the Platform
Unlike many acquisitions where niche software is absorbed and discontinued, Clay will continue to operate as a standalone service. The founders, Zachary Hamed and Matthew Achariam, emphasized that the alignment of values—specifically a shared commitment to open-source principles—drove the decision to join Automattic.
Looking ahead, the team is exploring deeper compatibility with open protocols, including ActivityPub (used by Mastodon) and the AT Protocol (used by Bluesky). While the current freemium pricing model remains in place, the company has not ruled out future adjustments. Currently, Clay manages over 150 million relationships across its macOS, Windows, iOS, and web platforms.
