Spotify is preparing to increase its U.S. subscription fees in the first quarter of 2025, according to a report from the Financial Times. This strategic adjustment follows a series of similar price hikes implemented by the streaming giant across international markets, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Australia.

The Financial Impact of Rising Fees

Currently, American subscribers pay $11.99 per month for the service, a significant increase from the $9.99 monthly fee established when the platform debuted in the U.S. 14 years ago. Financial projections from JPMorgan analysts suggest that even a modest $1-per-month increase in the U.S. market could bolster Spotify’s annual revenue by approximately $500 million.

Industry Pressure and Inflationary Trends

The decision to raise prices aligns with mounting pressure from major record labels. Industry stakeholders argue that music streaming subscription fees have failed to keep pace with inflation and remain undervalued when measured against the pricing models of video streaming competitors like Netflix.

Leadership Transition at Spotify

This pricing strategy update coincides with a major shift in the company’s executive suite. Spotify recently announced that founder Daniel Ek will step down from his role as CEO. The company is transitioning to a co-CEO structure, appointing Gustav Söderström—the current co-president and chief product and technology officer—and Alex Norström, the current co-president and chief business officer, to lead the organization into its next phase.
