Spotify reported a significant growth milestone on Tuesday, adding 5 million premium subscribers in the first quarter of 2025. This 12% year-over-year increase brings the platform’s total paid subscriber base to 268 million—the highest net addition for a first quarter since 2020.

Record Financial Performance

The streaming giant achieved a record-high quarterly operating income of €509 million (approximately $528 million). While this figure represents a robust performance, it fell slightly short of the company’s internal guidance of €548 million ($625 million). Despite this variance, total revenue climbed 15% year-over-year, reaching €4.2 billion ($4.8 billion).

These results build on the company’s recent streak of profitability, following the previous quarter’s operating income of €477 million ($509.48 million).

User Base and Platform Growth

Spotify’s ecosystem continues to expand, now boasting 678 million monthly active users (MAUs). Of that total, 423 million represent ad-supported users. The platform maintains its dominance over competitors like Apple Music and Amazon Music while aggressively diversifying its content library.

The Push Into Video Podcasts and AI

A key driver of Spotify’s current strategy is its pivot toward video content. The platform currently hosts 330,000 video podcasts, supported by the recently launched Spotify Partner Program, which distributed over $100 million to creators during the first quarter alone.

Innovation remains at the forefront of the company’s roadmap. Spotify has expanded its AI Playlist feature to over 40 additional markets, including Singapore, Kenya, Jamaica, Ghana, Fiji, and the Bahamas, further solidifying its global reach.
