Google officially announced on Tuesday a significant expansion of its Google Wallet platform, introducing support for digital government-issued IDs in additional U.S. states, new international availability, and a privacy-focused age verification system.

More U.S. States Adopt Digital IDs

Residents in Arkansas, Montana, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia will soon gain the ability to store official digital IDs directly within Google Wallet. Furthermore, the utility of mobile IDs is growing, as users in Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, and New Mexico will now be able to present their digital credentials at Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) locations.

With the federal REAL ID deadline set for May 7, 2025, Google is positioning Wallet as a convenient travel companion. Users can create an ID Pass using their U.S. passport to navigate TSA security checkpoints at supported airports. Despite this integration, Google emphasizes that digital passes are not legal replacements for physical documentation; travelers must continue to carry their physical ID cards.

Broadening Use Cases and Global Reach

Beyond government services, Google is increasing the practical applications for digital IDs. Users will soon leverage their Wallet credentials to:

  • Recover Amazon accounts securely.
  • Access online health services, including CVS and MyChart by Epic.
  • Verify user profiles on platforms such as Uber.

On the international front, Google is extending support to the United Kingdom, allowing residents to create and store digital ID passes using their U.K. passports. Additionally, Google Wallet is expanding its footprint to 50 new countries, though the company has yet to release a comprehensive list of the specific regions included in this rollout.

Privacy-First Verification via Zero-Knowledge Proof

To address growing concerns regarding online data privacy, Google is integrating zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) technology into its ecosystem. This system allows for age verification across mobile apps and websites without exposing sensitive personal data unnecessarily.

Google plans to deploy ZKP across its broader product suite and is actively partnering with third-party applications. For instance, Bumble will integrate Google Wallet’s digital IDs to confirm user identity while utilizing ZKP to verify age requirements. To foster industry-wide adoption, Google intends to open-source its ZKP technology, making it accessible to other digital wallets and online service providers.
