Amazon is officially re-entering the smartphone market over a decade after the discontinuation of the Fire Phone. According to a report by Reuters, the e-commerce giant is currently developing a new device codenamed “Transformer.”
The ZeroOne Vision
The project is spearheaded by “ZeroOne,” a specialized unit within Amazon’s Devices and Services division. This team is led by J Allard, a former Microsoft executive renowned for his pivotal role in the creation of the Xbox. Development focuses on deep integration with Amazon’s ecosystem, aiming to provide a frictionless experience for users of Prime Video, Prime Music, and Amazon Shopping.
Alexa as the Core Experience
Artificial intelligence serves as the primary differentiator for the “Transformer.” The smartphone is designed to act as a hardware vessel for Amazon’s revamped AI assistant, Alexa+. By embedding generative AI capabilities directly into the device, Amazon intends to incentivize customers to engage more deeply with its suite of AI-driven products.
The updated Alexa+ assistant, which launched this February, has already demonstrated advanced capabilities, including:
- Itinerary planning and travel management.
- Shared calendar synchronization.
- Recipe curation and library management.
- Personalized movie recommendations and educational support.
A Strategic Pivot Toward AI
This hardware initiative aligns with Amazon’s aggressive expansion into the artificial intelligence sector. The company recently committed a $50 billion investment into OpenAI and has projected $200 billion in capital expenditures for 2026, specifically targeting AI, robotics, and proprietary chip development. The “Transformer” project is viewed internally as a critical component in securing Amazon’s footprint in the AI-integrated consumer hardware space.
While the industry anticipates a significant comeback, Amazon has declined to provide official comments regarding the project’s development timeline or specifications.
