Airbuds, the San Francisco-based social music startup, has secured $5 million in new funding led by Seven Seven Six, the venture capital firm founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. The platform is rapidly gaining traction among Gen Z by allowing users to share real-time streaming activity via smartphone widgets, effectively solving a social integration challenge that tech giants like Apple and Spotify have struggled to master for years.

Scaling Through Seamless Social Integration
The startup’s growth metrics are significant: Airbuds has surpassed 15 million total downloads, boasting 5 million monthly active users and 1.5 million daily active users. According to data from Appfigures, the app maintains a 96% positive sentiment rating across more than 9,400 reviews. Unlike previous industry attempts at social music integration—such as Apple’s shuttered Ping and Connect services—Airbuds focuses on low-friction, passive sharing.
Co-founders Gilles Poupardin and Gawen Arab have leveraged their backgrounds in consumer product development, including their work on the social audio app Cappuccino, to refine the Airbuds experience. By utilizing iOS widgets, the app eliminates the “effort” typically required to manually update status or create playlists.

Beyond the Widget: Community and Identity
While the widget acts as the entry point, the platform has evolved into a robust social ecosystem. Users can interact with friends’ listening habits through:
- Reaction Tools: Use of emojis, stickers, and custom-clipped selfies.
- In-app Communication: Integrated messaging for direct interaction.
- Privacy Controls: A “ghost mode” for users to maintain private listening sessions.
- Personalized Analytics: Weekly Recaps that mirror the viral appeal of Spotify Wrapped.
The platform currently supports a wide array of services, including Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, Musi, Deezer, Amazon Music, and Audiomack.

Cracking the Code of Digital Self-Expression
Poupardin notes that approximately 30% of users now engage with deeper features beyond simple streaming updates, such as customizing their “Space” profile with favorite lyrics, photos, and albums. This focus on identity is a core driver for their primary demographic of high school and college students in the U.S., with growing footprints in the U.K., Australia, Brazil, and Mexico.

Future Roadmap and Total Funding
With this latest injection of capital, the company plans to explore new streaming service integrations, artist-to-fan connection features, and potential subscription models to monetize its active user base. To date, Airbuds has raised a total of $10 million, with previous backing from investors including a16z, SV Angel, and Dream Machine.

Airbuds is currently available for download on iOS and Android.
