Apple officially unveiled iOS 26 at WWDC 2025 this Monday, confirming a wave of industry speculation. The update marks a significant shift in Apple’s software strategy, introducing a major design overhaul, a dedicated gaming hub, and AI-driven health tools that align with months of pre-event leaks.
A New Era: The Rebranding of Apple OS
In a move mirroring automotive industry standards, Apple has abandoned traditional version numbering in favor of release-year naming. iOS 19 has been officially rebranded as iOS 26. This nomenclature change extends across the entire ecosystem, including iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26, signaling a unified approach to Apple’s annual software lifecycle.
Liquid Glass: A Radical Visual Overhaul
Described as the most substantial design evolution since iOS 7, the new interface draws heavy inspiration from the Vision Pro headset. Apple refers to this visual language as “Liquid Glass.” The aesthetic features translucent navigation panels and circular app icons, aiming for a cohesive experience across all devices, including CarPlay.
Key native applications received significant functional updates:
- Phone: Now allows users to merge favorite contacts, recent calls, and voicemails into a unified interface.
- Safari: Introduces a sleek, transparent address bar.
- Camera: Gains a refreshed visual layout for improved accessibility.
Gaming Hub and AI Coaching
Following its acquisition of game studio RAC7, Apple introduced a dedicated gaming app. This hub consolidates Apple Arcade titles and App Store content, offering a centralized location for achievements and leaderboards.
On the health front, the company launched Workout Buddy. Powered by artificial intelligence, this virtual personal coach provides real-time workout motivation while synthesizing data from the Health app, such as pace and distance.
Enhanced Productivity and AI Messaging
The Messages app now integrates Apple Intelligence to provide automatic, real-time message translation. Group chats also benefit from new AI-generated polling features. Following trends set by competitors like WhatsApp, Apple has finally added the ability to customize chat backgrounds.
iPad users also received a productivity boost: the macOS Preview app is now available on iPadOS, enabling robust PDF editing and annotation capabilities, as reported by Bloomberg.
What Didn’t Make the Cut?
Despite the comprehensive update, several highly-anticipated features were absent from the keynote:
- Advanced Siri: The context-aware Siri updates showcased in 2024 remain delayed.
- AI Battery Management: Rumored tools for dynamic power conservation were not announced.
- Hardware Features: Reverse wireless charging for accessories remains a rumor rather than a reality.
- Genmoji: The ability to combine custom emoji characters did not materialize.
While Bloomberg previously suggested that food-tracking features for carbohydrates and caffeine would arrive in the Health app, these were also omitted from the final presentation.
