Google officially announced on Thursday that Android is integrating Auracast support, a transformative Bluetooth technology designed to bridge the gap between public audio systems and personal hearing devices. This update enables hearing aids and compatible earbuds to connect directly to public broadcasts, significantly improving audio clarity in complex, noisy environments.

Transforming Public Audio Access

Auracast functions by creating direct audio streams from public sources—such as train station PA systems or concert venue soundboards—straight to a user’s device. By utilizing this technology, Google allows users to apply specific hearing aid presets to these streams, ensuring that audio is not only accessible but tailored to individual hearing needs.

Availability and Rollout Strategy

The rollout begins with Samsung Galaxy devices running One UI 7 and Google Pixel 9 smartphones operating on the latest Android 16 beta. Compatibility extends to LE Audio-enabled hearing aids, with initial support confirmed for industry leaders such as Starkey and GN Hearing.

To streamline the user experience, Google has introduced QR code connectivity for Pixel 9 devices. This bypasses the need to manually navigate through system settings, allowing users to join public broadcasts near-instantaneously.

New Features in Android 16

Beyond audio enhancements, the latest Android 16 beta introduces critical accessibility and security updates:

  • Visual Accessibility: A new tool allows users with low vision to outline text, significantly improving readability across the interface.
  • Local Network Protection (LNP): This security layer provides users with granular control over which applications are permitted to discover and interact with other devices on their local network.

Google anticipates a full public release of Android 16 by June, marking a significant step forward in both device security and inclusive mobile technology.
