Ben Affleck: AI Won’t Replace Hollywood Anytime Soon – Ankor Tech

Hollywood actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck recently dismissed concerns regarding artificial intelligence replacing human talent in the film industry. Speaking during a CNBC interview last week, Affleck argued that while AI has made rapid advancements, it lacks the creative depth required to replicate the work of actors and screenwriters.

The Limits of Artificial Creativity

Affleck’s stance comes despite last year’s industry-wide strikes, where unions fought specifically to secure legal protections against the encroachment of AI systems. Dismissing fears of immediate obsolescence, the actor stated that movies will be among the final industries to be fully automated.

“AI can write you an excellent imitative verse that sounds Elizabethan; it cannot write you Shakespeare,” Affleck noted, highlighting the distinction between technical mimicry and genuine artistic soul. He emphasized that the nuance of human storytelling remains beyond the current capabilities of machine learning models.

AI as an Industry Catalyst

Affleck, who currently operates a film studio alongside Matt Damon, demonstrated a technical understanding of the technology, referencing transformer architectures during the discussion. Rather than viewing the shift as a threat, he remains optimistic about the future of the profession.

According to his assessment, AI could potentially generate more opportunities for writers and actors rather than diminishing them. However, he offered a caveat regarding the broader production landscape: the visual effects (VFX) sector may face significant disruption and instability as the technology evolves.
