In a landmark move for the entertainment industry, AI video startup Runway has officially partnered with major Hollywood studio Lionsgate. The collaboration aims to train a proprietary generative AI model using Lionsgate’s vast film library, marking the first time a major studio has publicly integrated such technology into its creative workflow.

Transforming Cinematic Production

Lionsgate vice chair Michael Burns confirmed that the studio’s directors, filmmakers, and creative teams will receive exclusive access to the custom-trained model. The primary objective is to “augment their work,” providing creators with advanced tools to streamline production processes and enhance visual storytelling capabilities.

Beyond internal studio use, Runway is exploring future licensing opportunities. The company is evaluating strategies to offer these models as templates, potentially allowing individual creators to build and refine their own custom AI video solutions.

A Shifting Hollywood Landscape

While other industry giants like Disney and Paramount have reportedly engaged in preliminary discussions with generative AI providers, those talks have yet to materialize into formal agreements. This makes the Lionsgate-Runway deal a significant first-mover milestone in the integration of AI within high-budget cinema.

Legal and Regulatory Headwinds

The partnership arrives at a volatile time for both parties. The deal was finalized just one day after California signed new legislation designed to curb the unauthorized use of AI digital replicas in film and television projects.

Simultaneously, Runway is currently navigating legal challenges, including a lawsuit alleging that the startup utilized copyrighted material to train its existing models without proper authorization. As the industry grapples with these complexities, the collaboration with Lionsgate serves as a high-stakes test case for the future of AI-assisted filmmaking.
