Agence France-Presse (AFP), a global leader in news dissemination, has officially notified French regulatory authorities of a potential data breach following a sophisticated cyberattack detected last week. The incident, which disrupted parts of the organization’s news delivery infrastructure, has triggered an immediate investigation involving national security experts.
Cybersecurity Breach Impacts News Distribution
The AFP, which maintains a vast editorial network across 150 countries, confirmed the intrusion in a formal statement released this past Saturday. The agency acknowledged that the attack directly compromised segments of its service used to distribute content to international clients.
In response to the breach, AFP’s technical teams have mobilized, working in close coordination with the French National Agency for IT Systems Security (ANSSI) to contain the threat and assess the scope of the unauthorized access.
Regulatory Scrutiny and GDPR Compliance
The Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL), France’s primary data protection authority, has confirmed receipt of the mandatory notification from AFP. Under the stringent requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), organizations operating in Europe are legally obligated to report suspected data breaches to the CNIL within 72 hours of discovery.
“I can confirm that CNIL had received notice from the AFP regarding a potential breach of data,” a spokesperson for the agency stated.
Uncertainty Over Stolen Data
While the investigation is ongoing, the full extent of the exposure remains unclear. The agency has not yet confirmed whether sensitive customer information was exfiltrated during the attack. However, external security reports suggest that credentials for the agency’s file transfer (FTP) servers may have been compromised, potentially granting attackers access to internal content repositories.
No ransomware group or cybercrime syndicate has claimed responsibility for the operation, and the motive behind the attack remains unknown. The AFP maintains that it is still investigating the origin and intent of the perpetrators.
Operational Status
Despite the technical challenges, AFP continues to maintain its global news coverage. However, the impact of the incident is still visible, as several sections of the agency’s official website remain inaccessible at this time.
